We often work with clients at an early stage and this is when we add the most value.
We can assist with the design and specification of ecological mitigation measures to ensure that they are viable and practical, provide accurate cost models for budgeting and create programmes for critical path planning on a project. In short, we can give customers an early indication of the financial or timing impact of ecology and proactively reduce the risk.
Three Shires Ecological portfolio encompasses a huge variety of Ecology, Environmental, Traditional Conservation and Countryside Management Services.
Key Licenses:

With shorter days and colder weather setting in, our teams are busier than ever bringing ecological mitigation projects to completion throughout the country.

Night-time operations in full swing, our team is installing great crested newt mitigation fencing under a Natural England licence, helping a major highways project in the Midlands progress responsibly.

With utilities located close to the installation route, excavation was not an option. To overcome this, we designed an A-frame system that met the requirements of both the utility teams and the ecologists on site.

Our Ecological Contracting Team carried out the installation of a robust post-and-rail ecological mitigation fence to support onsite environmental protection measures.

Post-and-rail fencing with integrated Otter mesh, installed as part of ecological mitigation works in the north of the UK.
Three Shires Ltd were responsible for the Bat and Great Crested Newt Natural England mitigation licensing, destructive searches, ecological mitigation, design works, working at height activities, asbestos management, and roof stripping required for the permitted refurbishment of a Natural England historic site and building.
The development permitted the refurbishment of a heritage castle and the extension of its main building, incorporating three grade-listed outbuildings, in Warwickshire.
All buildings, including the castle, were occupied by multiple bat roosts, hibernation sites, maternity colonies, and day roosts, supporting common and soprano pipistrelle, brown long-eared, and various Myotis species.

Due to the creation of a new housing estate, it was necessary to construct a new badger sett for the resident badger family.

The existing sett was relocated, and peanut butter was placed inside the new sett to encourage the badgers to move into their new home.

All works were completed by one of our teams under a license from Natural England.

9,000m2 coir matting laid round a newly created lake.

Installation of our award-winning Herpetosure® Newt Fencing on a new housing development site in the East of England.

Our Ecology team supervising culvert maintenance work

Installation of licensed one-way Badger sets.

Hydro seeding added to water vole habitat creation scheme

Installation of great crested newt fencing to enable safe mitigation works.

Snake fencing installed to enable safe mitigation works.

Autumn and winter licensed clearing in Great Crested Newt buffer zones, using Ditch Witch flailing after careful fingertip searches by our Ecology Team.

Ditch Culvert crossings installation in Lincolnshire using in-house excavator and dumper.

Galvanised steel pipes installed to allow passage of water to flow at this natural stream.

Embedded, and surrounded by rock substrate.

Completion through compaction.
Three Shires Ltd were responsible for Bat & Great Crested Newt Natural England Mitigation Licensing, Destructive Searches, Mitigation, Design, Working at Height, Asbestos, Roof Stripping for permitted refurbishment of a Natural England historical site and building.

The Role of the Three Shires Ltd Ecologist
Our Principal Ecologist acted as the Lead Ecologist and Accredited Agent and was present for all on-site works during the demolition phase.
The Problem
All buildings, including the castle, were occupied by multiple roosts (including hibernation, maternity colonies, and day roosts) for common and Soprano pipistrelle, brown long-eared and Myotis species.
The Solution
To obtain a European Protected Species Mitigation (EPSM) license from Natural England to allow the planned works to proceed, our Bat Ecologist/s designed extensive mitigation measures and agreed with the developer a phased approach to the works.
The Outcome
Roosts were preserved. Where this was not possible, suitable replacement roosts were built into the buildings, the maternity colonies were retained in situ and protected during the works.
A Bat Hibernaculum was designed, which involved leaving an area of a basement closed off and undisturbed to ensure that conditions were cold, at a constant temperature and humidity. Suitable roosting crevices were provided by installing wooden wedge boards.
A bespoke Bat loft was built to provide a summer roosting site for a maternity colony of brown long-eared Bats: this was constructed before works began to replace a roost nearby, which would have been lost during development. Numerous Bat boxes of several types were installed on trees around the site before works commenced.
