Proactive Ecology Guidance

Protected Species Surveys and Mitigation

Habitat Creation

Three Shires has unrivalled experience in the following habitat works:

Standard Bat and Advanced Bat Survey & Assessment

Our Ecologists hold the necessary licences and skill set to carry out the full range of Standard and Advanced Bat Survey Techniques (ABST).  ABST may be required when an adverse impact on Bats is likely to occur at a landscape level, when the impact may affect multiple species and populations, or when standard survey techniques are deemed insufficient to capture the level of data required to inform detailed mitigation and compensation measures.

Great Crested Newt Survey & Mitigation

Three Shires expert and licensed Ecologists undertake Great Crested Newt surveys and Mitigation proposals over small- or large-scale habitats. The following elements are carried out efficiently and completed on time: 


  • pond surveys during the breeding season 
  • terrestrial surveys outside the breeding season but when newts are still active 


Three Shires Ecological experienced countryside contractors carry out all aspects of habitat management and creation including: 


  • amphibian/reptile exclusion and drift fencing, including both temporary amphibian fencing (TAF) and semi-permanent types 
  • grassland seeding and maintenance 

Badgers

Badger surveys can be undertaken at any time of year. However, the presence of dense vegetation can sometimes make survey during summer months difficult. Where this is a possible issue, winter/early spring may be a better period for survey, when dense vegetation has died back.

Three Shires create and apply survey work, carry out data analysis, assess effects, and provide advice on mitigation, legislative compliance, and habitat management for birds.  


Our Ecology Team has extensive backgrounds survey and monitoring of nesting birds and wintering birds. This joint capability gives us an excellent strategic overview of bird survey, data interpretation and assessment requirements.

Snake & Reptiles

Three Shires’ Ecology team have a broad knowledge of conducting large-scaled Snake & Reptile Surveys throughout the months of March to October. 


These assessments paired with Herpetosure Snake & Reptile Fencing offers protection to both the Species and active construction sites

Three Shires Ecological sector conduct efficient Dormice surveys between the months of March to November, this is due to the animal’s hibernation periods over the Winter Season.
