Biodiversity Net Gain [BNG], also referred to as off-setting, is an approach to development. It requires developers and landowners to have a positive impact ('net gain') on biodiversity, by making sure that habitats for wildlife are enhanced by 10% above their pre-development state, effective from Spring 2024 under the Environment Act 2021.
Its importance has been recognised by the UK Government marking a significant step forward in conservation efforts, as it prioritises the preservation and enhancement of our natural environment even in the face of urban expansion and infrastructure projects.

Our expert teams of ecologically trained operatives are able to carry out the measures needed to protect your site’s existing biodiversity.
With over 30 years of experience in habitat creation, we have the expertise you need to find the right on-site and off-site habitat creation solutions.
Throughout your project’s life cycle and beyond, we have the capability to carry out maintenance, putting in place the management strategies required to protect the gains.
Three Shires draws on our expertise in delivering Biodiversity Net Gain, creating, enhancing and managing wildlife habitats nationwide to help developers and landowners mitigate the impact of development works, and to ensure environments are left in a better state.
Biodiversity net gain can be achieved both onsite and offsite depending on a case-by-case basis.
We help developers and landowners to understand the scope of their site, and conduct initial habitat surveys through preliminary ecological appraisals, and ecological impact assessments to help identify the best way forward.
When net gain is not entirely achievable onsite, we can identify suitable sites for biodiversity offsetting. We work to find the most efficient solution and outcome, by liaising with planning authorities, estate owners and other stakeholders.
The most cost-effective way to achieve BNG is to enhance or create habitat on-site or by using nearby off-site landholdings. One method is to improve existing grassland through over-seeding and management practices such as cut-and-collect, as well as the creation of new wildflower meadows.
Our fleet of agricultural machinery allows us to carry out seeding works on all scales.
Planting diverse species, woodland and native hedgerows can assist BNG in the right areas, as well as maintaining and improving existing woodland areas.
Our planting and tree surgery teams can meet your woodland creation and maintenance requirements.
